Chapter Thirteen

The flames flicked throughout my body like never before. It had gone from nothing to a fiery temperature within seconds, terrifying me. I was out of control, and I wasn’t sure how the hell to calm down.

“Are you okay?” Mindy asked, sounding genuinely concerned.

Unable to verbalize anything, I jerked my head from side to side helplessly.

She touched my arm and yanked her hand back. “You’re hot. You must have found your dragon, and she’s overtaking you. Push it down and away. Don’t let her get the upper hand.”

I wanted to yell, “How the hell am I supposed to do that?” But I couldn’t do anything.

Egan’s voice popped into my head. Jade, are you under attack?

Great, I didn’t want him to be worried about me. I had enough on my plate without stressing over him. I’m struggling to connect with my dragon, but I’m fine. At least, I hoped I was.

“Get a handle on her,” Mindy said with urgency.

Trying to push everything from my mind, I concentrated on the flames. I shut down the link between Egan and me, not needing any distractions. Knowing him, he’d be rushing to me right now, but I’d address that after I got control over my dragon. He couldn’t see me struggling.

I tried to center myself. I’d learned in martial arts that letting your fear take hold meant you couldn’t think or act rationally and your fear could take on a life of its own. I wanted to latch on to the flames instead of squash them, but maybe my dragon was trying to tempt me.

Maybe Mindy was right—I shouldn’t consider each part as separate, but that was exactly what they felt like.

Ignoring the urge to embrace the flames, I continued to breathe in a steady rhythm, and after several long minutes, the fire receded. I wasn’t safe yet. The flames could erupt again without much effort.

Mindy touched my arm again. “You’re cooling down.”

Her stating the obvious irritated me, but at least, she was concerned about me, and I didn’t want to ruin the moment.

“Uh-huh.” That was all I could manage since I was still focused on keeping my breathing and heartbeat steady.

“Good, keep doing that.”

Her command irritated me, but I couldn’t let her get to me.

The flames didn’t appear to be a threat anymore, so I opened my eyes and found Mindy staring toward the neighborhood.

I turned and found Egan running toward me with Draco right behind.

Egan’s eyes glowed bright, especially against his dark gray shirt, and his pupils were slits. He raced directly to me and placed his hands on my shoulders, scanning me from head to toe. “Are you hurt?”

Mindy placed a hand on her hip. “Don’t be so dramatic. She lost control, that’s all.”

“She was scared,” Egan bit out without looking at her. He cupped my face and lowered his forehead against mine. His breath hit my face, which surprisingly didn’t smell like bacon.

“I’m fine.” I shut my eyes, enjoying his touch. I always found comfort in him.

Draco stepped next
